Gnome Shell 3 Desktop

Ubuntu by default comes with Unity desktop environment but we can enhance further on to make it look awesome with Gnome Shell 3 package. Here I will show you how we can modify your classic Ubuntu system to look like modern Hi-Tech System.

Gnome Shall 3 Setup

Install gnome-shell and desktop packages using below command and select Display Manager as “lightdm” when it prompt to choose one. It will take few minutes to install the package.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell ubuntu-gnome-desktop
sudo reboot

After this login using “Gnome (Default)” session selected in the login screen.

Blank Screen issue

If in case you are getting blank screen or login is not working then follow below step to make it work.
Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and move to terminal window

After login if blank screen getting then disable auto login to switch to Gnome shell. After switching to gnome shell we can reenable auto login

sudo vi gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

[SeatDefaults]  
greeter-session=unity-greeter  
user-session=ubuntu  
autologin-user=username
Other workaround for blank screen issue

Enter below command to give write permission to the root

mount -o remount,rw /

Below command to choose lightdm as the deafult Display Manager.

dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

Restart System using below command

sudo reboot now

After login with “Gnome Default” session install Docky package for 3D pannel

sudo apt-get install docky

Once installed goto search and type docky that will show the related App.

This will shows below dock panel like below and it will be auto started with logon.

Change Docky settings to look like below
